People sneak up on their cats and put a cucumber behind them, so when they turn, they freak out. There's a bunch of videos on youtube.
I'm pretty sure it's because cucumber = snake at a quick glance. It seems cruel - I've seen the way a cat jumps when there's a snake around (a tiger snake broke into my house) and it's the same kind of vertical terrified jump.
Years ago, I had a cat who either hated or loved bananas. It was hard to tell. Any time I brought a banana into the house, he attacked it, dragged it under the dining room table, and beat it horribly with front and back claws and fangs going full tilt to utterly destroy the banana.
