Automatic laser toy

So, Think Geek sells a toy that automatically wiggles a laser pointer around for your cat to chase. Having a very demanding cat in the way of play, I am kind of tempted to acquire one.

Won't the cat just throw the device off the table and roll it into some place where it will be hard to retrieve it from?

I have tried taping the laser pointer to "on" and put it on a rubber band, but the cats chased the pointer instead of the dot, and I was always worried about damaging their eyes...
